Get Ready for Tax Season: What Documents to Gather Now

Tax season may still feel a little far away, but getting organized early can make the process much smoother. Gathering your documents ahead of time can save you stress later and may even help you catch deductions or credits you might otherwise miss. Below is a simple checklist of what to start pulling together now so you feel prepared when tax season arrives.

1. Income Documents

These documents show how much income you earned throughout the year and help ensure your return is accurate.

  • W 2 forms from your employer or employers
  • 1099 forms for contract, freelance, or other income
  • Investment income statements from brokerage accounts
  • Social Security or pension income statements
  • Unemployment compensation forms

2. Expense and Deduction Records

If you itemize deductions or qualify for certain tax credits, keeping these records organized is important.

  • Mortgage interest statements, often from a 1098 form
  • Property tax receipts
  • Charitable contribution receipts
  • Medical and dental expense records
  • Education expenses such as tuition or student loan interest statements
  • Childcare or dependent care expenses, including provider information

3. Business and Self Employment Records

For freelancers, small business owners, or gig workers, these records are especially important.

  • Invoices and income records
  • Expense receipts for equipment, supplies, and mileage
  • Home office expense information, if applicable
  • Quarterly estimated tax payment records

4. Investment and Retirement Information

These documents help report contributions and any gains or losses.

  • Statements for IRA, 401(k), or other retirement contributions
  • Records of stock or cryptocurrency sales, including cost basis and sale price

5. Personal Information

Make sure your personal details are current and easy to access.

  • Social Security numbers for yourself, your spouse, and dependents, including birthdates for any new family members
  • Bank account information for direct deposit of any refund
  • Current email address and phone number

One of the easiest ways to stay organized is to create a dedicated folder, either digital or paper, labeled "2025 Taxes." As documents arrive, especially those mailed in January, place them directly into that folder. Staying organized now can mean less stress and fewer surprises when it is time to file.
